Tipperary Handball Notes – September 14th 2014

It was a big weekend for Handball with the Senior,Intermediate & Minor Singles taking place in Abbeylara. Daniel Hayes from Cashel was up against Johnny Woods from Tyrone in the Minor final and got off to a great start winning the first game 21/4. Woods took the second game 21/4 and in a thrilling third game Woods just edged it winning 21/19.

In the Intermediate Singles Gary McConnell from Meath beat Galway’s Martin Mulkerins having lost the first 21/12 but took control to win the next two 21/6, 21/7. In the Senior Singles 35 year old Eoin Kennedy from Dublin caused a major upset beating hot favourite Robbie McCarthy from Westmeath. McCarthy hammered Kennedy in the first 21/5 but Kennedy responded in the second winning 21/17. The final went to a third game for the first time in a decade and all felt the younger McCarthy would win out. Kennedy came out to lead all the way in third and finally win 21/12 to take his 9th senior title.

Tipperary Players were also involved in All-Ireland Doubles Semi-Finals at the Weekend. In GMAD Kevin Mullins & Jimmy Mullins Beat Sean Cunnane & Frank Macken Mayo in Castlebar 17/21, 21/6, 21/14. In Junior Doubles John Ferncombe & Kevin Dempsey Beat Jamie Murray & Martin Raftery in St Comans 21/8, 21/5. In Minor Doubles in Cashel Daniel Hayes & Jonathon Walsh Bt Niall Joyce & Sean Cunnane 21/9, 21/17. In DMAD Paddy Collins & Jeddy McKeogh beat Stephen Howley & Phillip Ferrick 21/12, 21/1 in Ballina.

In Dungarvan David Tobin & Paul Maher were beaten in MBD by Martin Cooney & Shane Bruen 21/8, 21/5. In St Comas Billy & Pakie Mullins were beaten in EMAD by Roscommon’s Dermot Doolin & Ger Walsh 21/17, 21/10. In MAD John & Eddie Corbett beat Jason Judge & Micheal Ginley in two straight games.

In SMAD Pat O Flaherty & John McQuaid take on Ronan Galvin & Cormac O’Brien in Ballina on Tuesday night @ 8pmM.
Tipperary contest 3 All-Ireland Finals next weekend with Pakie Mullins taking on Eugene Kennedy Dublin in Garryhill on Friday 19th in the Ruby Masters Singles. In the EMAS Billy Mullins takes on Johnny Brennan from Kilkenny. In SMAS in Lahorna Adrian Johnson is up against John Ryan from Carlowon Sunday and in DMBS in Cashel Gerry Foley is up against Miley Byrne from Wexford.
