“One in Five Tipperary children now suffering with Asthma” Mattie McGrath

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has described the numbers of people affected with Asthma in County Tipperary as startling and of genuine concern. Deputy McGrath was speaking to mark May 1st as International World Asthma Day:

“I must admit that I was shocked to discover the prevalence of the condition among the Tipperary population.

The Asthma Society of Ireland informs me that there are 15,377 Asthmatics in Tipperary living with the condition and that one in five children in Tipperary has asthma.
I would encourage all parents and indeed anyone who may suspect they have the condition to take immediate steps to obtain potentially life-saving information from organisations like the Asthma Society.

It is striking to read that only 7% of asthmatics know all asthma symptoms when surveyed and that 20% do not know that exposure to known asthma triggers is putting them at risk of an asthma attack.

This clearly points to a huge deficit in information about the condition; one that we need to rectify immediately.

For those young people who may be affected they can get fantastic advice and reassuring preventative information on Twitter @AsthmaIreland, Instagram @asthmasocietyofireland, or on Astma Ireland’s Snapchat @asthmasocietyie,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
