Nenagh Ormond Notes – 15/09/14

Nenagh Senior XV 10-17 Sundays Well

Nenagh played their last warm up game on Saturday in Nenagh before the commencement of the All Ireland League Division 2A, which kicks off next Saturday with a daunting long distance journey to Dungannon.  Having been defeated the week earlier in the Limerick Charity Cup against Old Crescent, a good performance was being sought to travel to the north with confidence.

Sundays Well, who were beaten by the Ormond lads twice last season were worth the win and Nenagh will definitely want to sharpen up ahead of Saturday.  Nenagh were under strength for Saturday with injuries and personal commitments but one cannot use that as an excuse.  Pre season has got the fitness levels up high however, basic errors were too common and some fine tuning this week will hopefully iron out these issues.

Sundays Well were first to score a try in the first half and followed it up with a second one, both of which had unsuccessful conversions.  Nenagh rallied before half time and Fergal Brislane buried his way over to score after a continuous spell of Nenagh pressure.  One felt that Nenagh would take control from here but unfortunately that was not the case.

The second half was full of bad execution and wrong decisions and the Well again were first to score to put them 17 to 5 up.  Nenagh did score again from a great handling move and when Ruaidhri O’Brien got space, well we know how he can finish and that closed the score line to within 7.  This was how the match finished and it really was not about the result, it was more about the performance.

Saturday, with the 4/5 hour bus journey up north to face into, is just one hurdle.  To play a big physical side like Dungannon who have played all their AIL rugby in division 1 is another, but Nenagh showed many times last season that they can win ugly and with spirit and that is what it will likely take this weekend.
