Independent TD Mattie McGrath has reminded all those who have an interest in the outcome of the Citizens Assembly that the deadline for submissions is 5pm tomorrow, Friday the 16th December. Deputy McGrath went on to encourage people who may have left it until now to make their voices heard on the protection of the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution:“I think it is important for people to realise that a submission does not necessarily have to be detailed or lengthy.A simple expression of firm support for the retention of the Eighth Amendment is all that is required.Although I have expressed serious reservations about the validity of the Assembly, I still think it important that we make our voices heard and push back against the narrow, limited and extreme views of those who want to see all constitutional protections for the unborn child removed. We must use this opportunity to demonstrate that the silent majority within this state do not share the political agenda that is shaping the abortion debate. The Repeal the Eighth Campaign have explicitly acknowledged that they would like to see access to abortion across all three trimesters for any reason whatsoever. That is not a view we can allow go to unchallenged. If people go to online to the Citizens Assembly website they can a submission in the space of a few minutes. It just might be one of the most important things you can do today,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
