Brave Borris fall short against St Paul’s of Waterford

The heroics of St Joseph’s in their recent Munster Semi-Final victory were on show again today as they took on a defiant St Paul’s Community College of Waterford today.

The match took place in the misty grounds of Cahir GAA, but the conditions didn’t hamper what was to be a fantastic display of hurling.

In a tight opening 15 minutes, it was St Paul’s who opened the scoring after 4 minutes. Both sides battled for possession but it was ultimately St Paul’s of Waterford who made the most of their chances converting 3 of their attempts to race into a 3 point lead.

St Josephs struggled to get on the scoreboard in the opening quarter but finally they registered their opening score after 17 minutes. The score settled St Josephs who found their rhythm, tacking on another two scores in the following 7 minutes to level the scores at 3 points all.

A flurry of scores were to follow as the Borris side tacked on two more points in quick succession. The Tipperary champions found the net on the 27th minute after a period of sustained pressure. The celebrations were short lived however as the Waterford side took advantage soon after, finding the net to score a goal of their own on the 29th minute. At the break, St Josephs went in two points up on a score of 1-5 to 1-3.

The second half second half started at a frantic pace as both schools traded scores in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, both scoring 2 points a piece. The next 10 minutes belonged to the Tipperary side as St Josephs managed to stretch their lead to two points on a score of 1-10 to 1-6.

The Waterford side found their purple patch however, scoring 3 unanswered points in the space of 5 minutes in what was to be a telling period of domination. Maintaining their possession, St Paul’s drew level on the 55th minute on a score of 1-10 to 1-10.

Borris responded regaining the lead but in a frantic 10 minutes, Paul’s dealt a severe body blow to the Tipperary side, scoring a hard worked goal on the 57th minute. The scoreline now reading 2-10 to 1-11 and with time running out, Borris ploughed forward in search of a goal. The strength of character which had seen them through their last match was on show again in an inspiring rally. Scoring another point to narrow the gap to a single point, it looked like Borris might just keep their dream of a Munster title alive, taking another game to extra time.

It was not to be the fairy tale ending however as St Paul’s broke to score what was to be the final point of the game. The two sides were evenly matched and the standard was a credit to their mentors and schools. The final score on what was an exhibition of hurling was St Paul’s (Waterford) 2-11 to St Josephs (Tipperary) 1-12

The Shane Hourigan Memorial Cup itself is named after a referee who passed away tragically in 2014. Shane refereed the All-Ireland minor hurling semi-final between Kilkenny and Waterford before his passing. This game was to be a great tribute to Shane and was played in front of a large crowd.
