Joseph O’Brien quits as Jockey to focus on Training

Dual champion jockey, Joseph O’Brien, is set to quit riding to concentrate on his new role as a trainer.

The decision won’t come as a surprise for many as the Tipperary Jockey has made his intentions to make the transition to training well known.

The move had been widely expected as the record-breaking jockey had been turning his attentions more to the training side and is in the process of taking out a full licence.

Widely considered to have been tall for a flat jockey, O’Brien was likely to have struggled with the scales as he matured, but is looking to gain his training licence shortly.

“It’s hard enough to make a decent job of one thing never mind trying to juggle two things so I’ll be concentrating on training and won’t be riding any more,” O’Brien told the Racing Post.

With the sporting worlds eye’s beginning to focus on horse racing in the run up to the Cheltenham Festiveal, the announcement by O’Brien will gain much interest from racing fans of both flat and national hunt. O’Brien will certainly be an exciting proposition as a trainer and we look forward to his new career
