All Ireland Senior Hurling Final

For the third consecutive year the All-Ireland hurling final finished in a draw, Kilkenny 3-22 Tipperary’s 1-28.This was Tipperary and Kilkenny fourth time in six years contesting an All-Ireland senior hurling final . The stats before the final were that both sides had played five games to get to the final, Kilkenny scoring 13-110 (149) and conceding 8-77 (101), while Tipperary had hit 14-107 (149) and conceded 8-78 (102), so there was little to choose between them going on form and that is exactly how it turned out. From the first whistle, both teams conspired to transport the crowded house in Croke Park into a kind of dream, with score after brilliant score defining the afternoon.

senior hurling

Tipperary had some excellent goal chances. They had two penalties saved, saw Lar Corbett hammer a terrific shot against the post and Kilkenny’s Eoin Murphy deflect Patrick Maher’s 59th minute drive over the crossbar. Momentum swung each way with the goals but it was the strikes from distance, the relentless series of jaw-dropping points which defined the day. This was one of the greatest All Ireland hurling finals ever and what a performance by Tipperary and Kilkenny. No team probable deserved to lose and although Tipperary created the majority of the goal scoring chances with a few minutes to go we would have settled for a draw. Huge credit must go to the Tipperary players who served up an exhibition of hurling and never gave up the fight when the game seemed to be going against them at times. We congratulated all the players for a wonderful performance and to the management team who had them in such great shape in every way.
