Lonergan welcomes allocation of Sports Capital Grants to Clonmel/Cahir Borough District

Independent County Councillor, Martin Lonergan has welcomed the allocation of funding to Sports Clubs in Clonmel/Cahir Borough District by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Mr Shane Ross TD.

Commenting on the announcement Cllr. Lonergan said, “The Sports Capital Programme aims to foster an integrated and planned approach to developing sports and physical recreation facilities throughout the country. In particular, its objectives are to assist voluntary and community organisations, local authorities and in some cases VECs and schools to develop high quality, safe, well-designed, sustainable facilities in appropriate locations and to provide appropriate equipment to help maximise participation in sport and physical recreation.

It helps to prioritise and assist the needs of disadvantaged areas in the provision of top class sports facilities and encourages the multi-purpose use of local facilities by clubs, community organisations and national governing bodies of sport.”

Concluding Cllr. Lonergan added, “I have no doubt that the funding announced will greatly assist our various Clubs across the District to improve their facilities, will assist in creating a greater awareness of the need of recreation and sport amongst our young people and will provide clubs with the ability to progress their various projects and developments. I again thank those clubs, the majority of whom give of their time voluntarily to develop and enhance our communities. I wish them all the best of luck in their various developments.”
