Match Focus: Nenagh Celtic v Nenagh Afc

In this focus we look forward to what has become the biggest fixture in the NT&DL calender.

Champions Nenagh Afc travel the short distance to Nenagh College to face cross town rivals Nenagh Celtic knowing a big performance is needed. Both teams, with 3 wins out of 3 in the league, will be hoping to land the first blow in this highly anticipated affair. Two hugely talented teams mixed with youth and experience makes this very interesting, Celtic will Look to players like Jimmy Hynes (top scorer), Craig Connolly, Stephen Flynn and Mark Walsh to guide the talented and very young superstar that is Paul Walsh. P. Walsh, likely the youngest of the starting XI on Sunday will look to bring his outstanding form at youth level to this, the biggest fixture in Nenagh.

Nenagh Afc however will look to put both disappointments against St Michaels behind them and cement their status as the Leagues top team. Again a huge mix of experience and youth will be on show with Mark McKenna John Butler and Aaron savage will look to guide the exciting trio of Daniel Butler, Roy Creagh and Ryan Gilmartin, all of whom have 3 goals so far this season. Other big game players like Bryan McGee, Mole Mitchell and Mark Cahill will look to play some part and Luke Kennedy, Jordan Lewis and Nathan Kelly will also look to add to their rising reputations. Other youths in Celtic, Eddie Shoer, Sean O’Meara and Matas Mikalajunas will hope to get their chance but the whole of Nenagh should be and most probably will be on edge this weekend as a win for either team will most definitely put them in pole position in this year’s race.

League Results in last year’s race Afc held the upper hand with a 2-1 home win after a Ryan Gilmartin brace and Celtic held firm at home in a goalless draw, a result that effectively won the league for AFC. In the Ricky Fogarty Cup Final AFC won 5-2 but only after extra time and in the Tipperary Cup Final penalties were the deciding factor, once again in AFC’s favour. One result that might ne worth mentioning is the last time these sides met in Nenagh College Celtic ran out 3-2 winners.
