Noel Coonan TD Welcomes Arrival of Students to Templemore

Tipperary TD Noel Coonan said today is a pivotal day in the history of policing and for Templemore Town as 100 new Garda students enter the Garda College to commence their training. Deputy Coonan warmly welcomed the arrival of the new students for the first time since 2009.

Deputy Coonan said: “New students are today entering the gates of Templemore Garda College for the first time in five years. It demonstrates the ongoing commitment of this Fine Gael-led Government to supporting Garda Síochána following the previous Government’s ban on recruitment.”

“This intake is a vital step forward for the community here in Templemore. It means so much to the town and will contribute towards a stronger economy in the area. It is also a boost for Garda Síochána nationwide and will revive and strengthen the force.

“I look forward to an increase in Garda numbers locally in Tipperary; and in Roscrea in particular.

“This recruitment follows a major recruitment overseen by the Public Appointments Service which proved very popular with over 20,000 applications. It is expected there will be at least one more intake of students between now and Christmas. All in all it is great news for Templemore Garda College,” concluded Deputy Coonan.
