Deputy Coonan explained: “This excellent news is hugely attributed to Fine Gael’s efforts in Government and our rethinking of how to attract businesses to Tipperary. No one factor gets a project over the line. It’s a combination of team work and I want to acknowledge the efforts of An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Jobs Minister Richard Bruton and Minister Alan Kelly. I was pleased to work with them during their negotiations.

“An Taoiseach Enda Kenny met with the CEO of First Data in May and Jobs Minister Richard Bruton first met the company in the United States on trade missions on a number of occasions. The project is strongly supported by the Department of Jobs through IDA Ireland. The latest phase of the Government’s Regional Action Plan for Jobs has placed a greater emphasis on the need for towns such as Nenagh to reach its economic potential and accelerate employment.

“This is the company’s first Irish location outside of Dublin which is a massive vote of confidence in Tipperary. Proximity to LIT Thurles and University of Limerick and a competitive property solution, combined with support from IDA, assisted First Data with their location decision. Research shows that for every job created in technology, another job is created in the service and supplies industry.

“The company has identified a 32,000 sq ft building in Stereame Business Park Nenagh where the centre will be based. First Data are at an advanced stage in securing a lease for the building. On completion of signing the lease, renovations on the building, which will take up to 12 months to complete, will commence. The company will commence hiring later in 2016 with a view to commencing operations early in 2017.

“This announcement will pull talented workforce form nearby towns however additional IDA investment is needed in towns including Roscrea, Templemore and Thurles. We are working to this end. IDA site visits to Tipperary have increased significantly and I continue my calls for FDI to be directed to Tipperary. Tipperary has huge potential and is strategically positioned in the Mid West.

Among the anticipated work at the new R&D center in Nenagh will be application/software development, application analysis, business analysis, technical project management, systems consulting, and enterprise architecture,” said Deputy Coonan.
