C&C are finally starting to listen to our concerns – McGrath

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has welcomed the decision by the CEO of the C&C Group Stephen Glancey to facilitate a meeting with him at the Bulmers Plant in Clonmel next Monday. Deputy McGrath was speaking this morning from the C&C AGM which he attended in order to highlight the ongoing challenges and uncertainties being faced by the Clonmel based workforce:

“Persistence in pursuing this matter on behalf of the workers has certainly paid off in terms of making the issues completely unavoidable for the Board of C&C.

The treatment I received today stands in stark contrast to last year when the Groups Chairman Sir Brian Stewart attempted to forcibly evict me from the AGM!

This year I am glad to say that a follow up meeting with the Managing Director of C&C Ireland Mr Tom McCusker will take place in Clonmel this Monday when serious questions will be asked and firm assurances sought about the long term commitment of C&C to the Irish workforce.

At present there is genuine anguish among the workers in Bulmers Clonmel and the associated workers in Gleasons and Borrisoleigh who are being advised of more redundancies being put on the cards

It is simply inconceivable that C&C can expect the workers to take them at their word as things stand.

Failure to honour redundancy commitments and ongoing fears about the wholesale transplantation of the company’s operations to Belfast and Scotland must be addressed and dealt with. Lack of clarity in this matter is creating real problems with morale among the workers who have already endured a five year pay freeze.

For my own part I am delighted that some movement has at last occurred in achieving what is ultimately the only matter of any real significance; the just and fair treatment of those workers and managerial staff who have helped generate hundreds of millions in profit for the Group over the last number of years,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
