Tipperary boost Promotion Chances after defeating Offaly

Tipperary 2-11 Offaly 0-12

Tipperary is known across the globe as the home of hurling. The association of the blue and gold to the ancient game is due in part to our success at all levels. The footballers are now trying their best to make a name for themselves.

Tipp Football

Tipperary football has been making progress in the past decade with Declan Browne being widely touted as one of greatest footballers to grace the Premier County. Tipperary have challenged more and more every year. Having gone 60 years without an All-Ireland Minor title, the Minor Footballers claimed 2 in 3 years, winning in 2009 and 2011. The backbone of that minor team are now playing their part to bring success to our senior football team.

Tipperary’s display yesterday against Offaly was decisive, confident and clinical. Manager Liam Kearns now believes his charges have a realistic chance of gaining promotion to the second tier of the Allianz Football League and yesterdays comfortable victory would indicate that it is a very real possibility. Next up for Tipp is a game against Longford next Sunday, a tough game with everything up for grabs.

Tipp’s inside forwards were clinical in front of goal with Michael Quinlivan and Conor Sweeney scoring 1-10 against demoralized Offaly. Kearns said after the match: “We played some good football in the first-half and got our scores. It was a slog in the second-half but we got the job done. In the circumstances, we’re very happy, now secure in Division 3. We’ll have a look at promotion now and see what we can do. We have to go to Longford next Sunday and win that. Will eight points be enough to get you up? I’d say we’d probably need another point from our last two matches then.”

Offaly’s lack of discipline proved costly in an error ridden first half in which Martin Dunne and Michael Quinlivan both netting goals to give Tipperary a 2-8 to 0-5 lead at half time. Offaly picked up their play in the second half making the scoreboard more respectable, however Tipperary ran out deserving 5 point winners.
