South East unemployment figures highest in the country – McGrath

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has highlighted the latest statistics demonstrating the persistently high levels of unemployment in the South East Region. Deputy McGrath was speaking after the figures which were compiled and released by Public Policy.ie show the South East region still topping the table of all eight regions when it comes to unemployment in its workforce population:

“These statistics which are based on evidence from the Quarterly National Household Survey (QNHS) demonstrate conclusively just how wrong the previous Government got it when it referred to keeping the recovery going.

We know that from 2011-2013 the unemployment rate in the South East peaked at 20.1%, which was significantly ahead of both Dublin at 13.4 and the West at 17.2%.

Today the unemployment rate in our region is 11.9% which is still at the top of the table in terms of the number of people out of work.

I have been saying this for some time now; that the so called recovery is grossly unbalanced in terms of regional economic development.

These figures confirm that fact and show that the South East is being continuously marginalised when it comes to job creation.

If anything, these numbers point to the even greater urgency for a new stable government to be formed at the earliest possible opportunity.

There is simply too much work to be done for the main parties to continue engaging in empty rhetoric and pointless political posturing,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
