“Des Hanafin was a statesman who embodied a noble political tradition,” Mattie McGrath
Independent TD Mattie McGrath has expressed his condolences to the family of former Fianna Fail Senator, Des Hanafin, who has passed away at the age of 86. Deputy McGrath was speaking ahead of the funeral of Mr Hanafin which is due to take place this Sunday in The Cathedral of the Assumption, in Thurles:
“Des personified the true spirit of public service over the course of a lifetime dedicated entirely to the common good.
His political philosophy was rooted in a fundamental respect for the dignity of the human person.
That approach was to be seen not just in his commitment and unswerving support for the Pro-Life cause, but also in his passionate denunciation of the kind of politics that worked against the interests of the ordinary man and woman on the street.
Politics for Des was about justice and fairness. It was about challenging the powerful and holding them to account with courage and conviction.
At a personal level I will certainly miss him and the wealth of knowledge he possessed on any number of issues; knowledge that he willingly shared with generosity and unfailing good humour.
I want to offer the heartfelt sympathies of my entire family to Des’ wife Mona, his daughter Mary and son John, who I also had the privilege of working with during my own time in the Oireachtas,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
