Local Fianna Fáil TD, Jackie Cahill has said that he is deeply saddened at the passing of former Senator, Des Hanafin.
“I’ve known Des, and his family, for as long as I can remember. He was a central figure in the local Fianna Fáil organisation in North Tipperary, and remained interested in, and committed to, his local community until the end.
“As a County Councillor, and Senator, Des was a passionate advocate for the causes he believed in. He stood his ground, and that counts for a lot in politics.
“A proud Thurles man, he loved nothing more than throwing open the doors of his home on Munster Final day to welcome visitors from across the province.
“He was so proud of both his children, John and Mary, and I have no doubt that seeing them elected to public office was a moment of sheer joy for Mona and him. His grandchildren also brought him great joy and pride.
“Locally, Des’ commitment to Thurles and Tipperary politics is being continued on by his nephew, Seamus who was only recently elected as Chair of the Municipal District Council.
“This is a sad time for all of us in the Tipperary Fianna Fáil family, but especially for his wife, and two children.
