PRESS COUNCIL OF IRELAND: The Press Council of Ireland provides the public with an independent forum for resolving complaints against the press and seeks to maintain standards in Irish Journalism and Journalistic ethics.  It is comprised of 13 people, with a majority of seven independent members drawn from outside the press industry to include the chairman.  Council member are also directors of the Press Council of Ireland and have regulatory and governance responsibilities.  The Press Council of Ireland has been given statutory recognition by the Oireachtas under the terms of the 2009 Defamation Act.


As three independent members of the Press Council have reached the end of their terms of office, applications are currently being sought for new members.  Members are chosen to reflect the various strands of Irish society and are drawn from suitable persons representing a broad spectrum of society.  Applications should be persons of integrity and be free of any involvement in the press industry that could pose a conflict of interest.  Successful applicants are appointed for a term of three years and may serve a maximum of two terms.

A letter outlining you suitability of this role, accompanied by a CV should be sent to: The Chairman, Appointments Committee, The Press Council of Ireland, 3 Westland Square, Pearse Street, Dublin 2.  By 17.00 on Friday 25th March 2016   Successful candidates will be appointed after an interview process by an independent Appointments committee. Independent members are remunerated at a comparable level to council membership of other public and/or regulatory bodies.
