Did you know that in 2020 Nenagh will celebrate 800 years marking the development of the town over the ages?
During this year it is hoped to put Nenagh on the map and to showcase what Nenagh has to offer – its heritage, its culture, its sporting facilities, its retail offering, its people. In short, everything that makes Nenagh the town that it is – a town with a welcome for everyone.
Central to Nenagh 800 is the iconic Nenagh Castle – the landmark keep which is synonymous with Nenagh. During 2020, if you have never climbed the 101 steps to the top why not put it on your list of things to do and enjoy the panoramic views of the town, its hinterland and stretch all the way to the majestic Shannon and Lough Derg. Learn about its history and the links with the Butler and O’ Kennedy clans. And visit the newly opened Castle Garden which is adjacent to the Castle and provides a place to reflect, meditate or just chill out.
We are looking for ideas as to how Nenagh 800 can be celebrated. We are calling on clubs and organisations to see what event they might run to mark this historic occasion. We are calling on the owners of properties to ensure that Nenagh looks its best. We are looking for people to participate in our committee to make Nenagh 800 a special year, a year to remember and a year that will encourage people to come to Nenagh – to a game, to a show, to an event, to shop, for a visit, for a holiday, for a trip down memory lane. If you have ideas or would like to be involved contact us at [email protected]. We are already working on a number of ideas with a view to ensuring that there is at least one event every month.
Song for Nenagh:
If you are musically minded there is a chance for you to write a song for Nenagh 800. Entries are now open for Nenagh 800’s Song for Nenagh competition. Original entries are invited from people from Nenagh, people living in or originally from Nenagh or working in Nenagh and its surrounding area. Entrants must be over 18 years of age. Closing date is 1st October 2019. The winning entry will be selected by independent judge singer & songwriter Luka Bloom. The prize is one day’s recording at Ballyhane Studio with Post Production Mix plus €200. Full details are available at https://www.nenagharts.com/song-for-nenagh/ or email [email protected].
