The Community Virtual Power plant (CVPP) is an INTERREG funded European project which aims to demonstrate how community groups can establish their own community based virtual power station and in doing raise awareness of the potential of generating their own energy needs from renewable sources.
A virtual power plant sources it energy needs through local authorities, SME or individual consumer collaborating and investing in low carbon technologies such as solar panels to generate their own energy requirements
Tipperary County Council and Tipperary Energy Agency recognised the potential for Tipperary to be part of this project through its commitment to energy efficiency and in meeting climate change targets. Three sites in the county were selected and PV arrays will be installed at the following sites during 2019.
Roscrea Leisure Centre
Thurles Leisure Centre
Thurles Municipal District Offices
This will contribute to reducing energy bills at these sites and increase Tipperary Co Co the level of renewable energy sources. The excess energy produced will be sold to Templederry Renewable Energy Supply Ltd, trading as CRES (Community Renewable Energy Supply) has begun trading electricity on the Single Electricity Market (SEM). CRES is Ireland’s first fully community owned electricity supply company. It is a sister company to Templederry Community Wind Farm in County Tipperary, Ireland’s only operational community owned wind farm.
