IFA RAISE BREXIT SHEEP ISSUES WITH TANAISTE SIMON COVENEY

IFA National Sheep Chairman Sean Dennehy, together with a delegation from Cork IFA, met with the Tánaiste Simon Coveney to discuss Brexit and a number of other farming issues.

Sean Dennehy raised a number of issues specific to the sheep sector.

He said sheep farmers are very concerned about Brexit and the impact on the sector. We raised Brexit specific sheep issues on the New Zealand lamb quota, impact of exchange rates, tariffs on UK imports, Northern Ireland lamb imports, the land bridge route and the need for compensation.

Sean Dennehy said IFA also raised important issues regarding the financing the CAP Budget and protecting direct payments to farmers. “We highlighted the need for a strong environmental scheme of up to €10,000 in the next CAP.”

The IFA sheep farmers’ leader said sheep farmers are critical to environmental sustainability, especially in hill and mountain areas, and it is essential that there is a strong environmental payment to farmers in the next CAP.
