Independent Councillor for the Tipp/Cahir/Cashel Municipal District, Máirín McGrath has welcomed the launch of the Community Environment Action Fund by Minister Richard Bruton this morning. The scheme will fund small scale, non-profit environmental projects at local levels and is open for applications from today.

“I would encourage community groups and schools to apply for this rollout of funding that will not only enhance the visual appearance of their areas but also help them to do their bit for the environment and plant and animal species in the locality. This fund could not come at a better time, our society is becoming more environmentally aware and conscious of our need to preserve and protect our climate.” Máirín believes.

The scheme which was formerly known as the Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund has previously financed sustainability projects across towns and villages in Ireland. €1 Million euro has been made available for the current roll-out.

Speaking after Minister Bruton’s announcement this morning, Cllr Máirín said “The recent trends in developing wild-flower gardens, “Ant Hotels” or community vegetable allotments can continue to grow with the help of this scheme.”

“I would highly encourage Tidy Towns groups and Community Councils who want to tackle climate change on a small scale and promote biodiversity in in their locality to take advantage of the €1 Million funding that has been made available to develop educational initiatives, rain-water harvesting schemes or other innovative and creative ideas that will bring young and old together through these community led projects.”

Funding has been made available from the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment and matched by funding from Local Authorities. Applications are now open and available from Tipperary County Council until the closing date on September 27th, 2019 at 5pm.

“Groups, schools or clubs that are hoping to apply can get more information onwww.dccae.gov.ie or as always, are free to contact me for further information and assistance with the application.” Concluded Cllr. McGrath
