It’s not unusual for a soap actor to appear in two or more soaps, but it is extremely rare for anyone to appear in two soaps simultaneously…
When Leah Egan became a permanent fixture in Carraigstown as Lousie Doyle earlier this year, I assumed that was the end of her Ros na Rún character Garda Alanna Ní Ruairc. It wouldn’t have been the first time that a character from the TG4 soap mysteriously disappeared over the summer months when the show was off the air.
But sure enough, Alanna re-appeared in Ros na Rún this week, despite Lousie very much keeping busy on Fair City, holding down the fort in Vino’s while her sister Yvonne takes off on a much needed break. So it appears that Athlone native Leah Egan is pulling double duty, dividing her time between Dublin and Galway as she juggles both soaps.
As a fan of both characters, I hope that Alanna and Louise can continue appearing on our screens, and if filming schedules permit it would be possible to see Egan alternate between roles for quite a long stretch, although presumably it will only be a question of time before one of the characters makes an untimely exit, whether it be from Ros na Rún or Fair City…
Let’s hope no decision has to be made in the foreseeable future and we can continue to flick over from watching Louise on Fair City to seeing what new adventures Alanna has to bring to Ros na Rún. Regardless of what happens though, good job and good luck to Leah Egan for committing to portraying these two very different characters.
