O Brother, Where Art Thou?

By Cian Taafe

I had been thinking for quite some time that Bryan Murray’s on screen alter ego Bob Charles was desperately in need of another big storyline for the actor to sink his teeth in to, as it is almost criminal to let such an acting talent sit idly by in the background of other characters’ goings on. Sure, he was embroiled in the Saga of Tommy & Judith Dillon which resulted in Bob being shot, but that was nothing compared to some of Bob’s former escapades.

There was a time a few years ago when Bob Charles was dominating the screentime in Fair City, as his on-going feud with Louie Gleeson gripped viewers, and of course who can forget Murray’s outstanding performances when Bob’s fall from grace left him homeless with no one to turn to for help – ‘Twas almost as compelling as Murray’s days as Trevor Jordache… before he was buried under the patio, obviously (Bring Back Brookside!!!)

So you can only imagine my delight when another of Ireland’s finest actors Owen Roe rocked up in Carrigstown last month playing Dr Jim Cauley, who just happes to be Bob’s estranged brother, having arrived on the scene not knowing Bob had set down roots in the area. The two have spent decades apart without seeing or speaking to each other due to a falling out over Bob having an affair with Jim’s wife.

Roe himself has been a breath of a fresh air to the soap and his character is already making waves and settling in well with many of the characters, but the scenes he shares with Murray are in a league of their own, with the tension between the warring brothers nothing short of electric. Not to mention it gives Bob some well deserved purpose on the show once again, aside from flipping burgers in the Hungry Pig.

As the war between the two brothers rages on, it’s becoming more and more apparent that this is merely the calm before the storm, with Jim popping pills as if they were Tic Tacs and desperately trying to keep his son away from Carrigstown and “Uncle Bob” – perhaps because Bob might be the father? – so surely more shit is sure to go down and further secrets revealed between the two… We can only hope!
