Senator Garret Ahearn has welcomed almost 6 million in funding from The Higher Education Authority for the newly developing Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest (TUS) which is set to be established on the 1st of October. The funding is to support them in their progression towards Technological University status and in post-establishment development.

Senator Garret Ahearn said “I am delighted that this funding will be provided to help LIT with the transition from an Institute of Technology to a Technological University. The establishment of Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest (TUS) on the 1st of October marks an important milestone for County Tipperary.

Senator Garret Ahearn continued “This funding underlines the Department, and the HEA’s, continuing commitment to supporting the changes underway in establishing the technological University in Tipperary. The funding is part of an overall package of €25.67m in Transformation Funding for Technological Universities and builds on the €34.33m awarded in 2020.

“The higher education landscape is quickly evolving, and the people of Tipperary will henceforth be at the heart both geographically and practically of that evolution. This new technological university will increase higher education access and increase opportunities for students, staff, business and enterprise, local communities, and regional stakeholders.

“This represents the second tranche from the Technological University Transformation Fund (TUTF). A total of €90m will be awarded in total over a 3-year period to assist the development and progression of technological universities across the country.

“It is anticipated that the creation of technological universities will significantly enhance progress towards national and local priorities, particularly in the areas of access to higher education such as Tipperary” Senator Garret Ahearn concluded.
