Tipperary TD, Jackie Cahill has said that a specific Tipperary jobs task force is needed to address the decline in jobs in the county, at a time when other counties are seeing significant investment from IDA backed companies.

Deputy Cahill was commenting after a meeting with the Enterprise and Jobs Minister, Mary Mitchell O’Connor to discuss the recent job losses at the Coty factory in Nenagh.

“In addition to meeting with the Minister, I had the opportunity to question senior officials from the Department, the IDA and Enterprise Ireland about their plans for the site.

“They confirmed to me that the site will not revert back to IDA possession until 2019, but that they are confident that a successor operation can be found.

“They seem confident that they can market the location, and secure new investment in time by 2019.

“This is an absolute requirement as we have seen non-stop job losses up and down the county over the past eight years.

“There is an urgent need for a jobs taskforce to prioritise investment in Co. Tipperary, not only from multinational corporations but also to support indigenous employers and entrepreneurs.

“If competitiveness is an issue in maintaining jobs or attracting investment, then the Minister needs to urgently address deficits in that area. We have a skilled work force, good infrastructure, and a competitive and transparent tax system.

“Tipperary deserves better than a Government that ignores the economic plight of rural counties,” concluded Cahill.
