Tipp Civil Defence activities are being restricted at Local Authority Level

“Tipp Civil Defence activities are being restricted at Local Authority not national level,” Mattie McGrath

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has called on Tipperary Local Authority to explain why it is continuing to restrict the activities of Tipperary Civil Defence at local sporting or community events. Deputy McGrath was speaking after he received a reply to a Parliamentary Question on the matter to the Taoiseach and Minister for Defence Enda Kenny:

“Many people were deeply frustrated at the restrictions placed on the great work of the local Civil Defence units. In order to find out if this was the result of new national regulations I asked the Taoiseach to clarify the matter.

He made it explicitly clear to me that there is no prohibition in Civil Defence Units engaging in community support activities and that the day-to-day operational management of local Civil Defence units is the responsibility of the relevant local authority in which the unit is based.

He went on to say that in this context, it is a matter for each local authority to determine the type of community events that can be supported and the level of support that can be provided.

In light of that information I will be asking the CEO of the Tipperary Local Authority and the Civil Defence Officer (CDO) who is a full-time employee of the local authority and is responsible for the day-to-day management of Civil Defence matters under the overall direction of the Chief Executive of the local authority, to explain why Tipperary Civil Defence continue to suffer from these restrictions when there is no national rule requiring them,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
