Right to a homecare package must be placed on a statutory basis for older people – Cahill

Fianna Fáil TD for Tipperary, Jackie Cahill has said that more must be done to keep older people in their homes for as long as possible, and that the right to homecare must be placed on a statutory basis.

Deputy Cahill was speaking during a debate in Dáil Éireann on the topic of home care packages and the Fair Deal Scheme.

“Less than 5% of all older people need care in their later years. Our supports and systems need to be tailored towards this reality.

“We know that when older people are enabled to stay in their homes that their health stays better for longer.

“We can do this in a number of ways: increase the number of home help hours and home care packages, and provide better supports for their carers.

“Fianna Fáil has a proposal to provide for a statutory right to home care, in the same way that older people have a right to nursing home support.

“Home care packages that provide the necessary supports for older people to stay in their home, surrounded by the family, friends and community, must be put on a statutory basis.

“It’s more cost effective for the State and abundantly better for the older person and their family. Older people deserve this from their country, and I, as a long TD will fight for it,” concluded Cahill.
