Coonan Welcomes Commitment to Further Garda Recruitment

Deputy Noel Coonan has welcomed a commitment in Budget 2015 for 200 new Garda recruits due to enter Templemore Garda College in December and January.

“Fine Gael in Government has announced a €40 million increase in the current budget allocation for An Garda Síochána, which reflects a 5% increase in the allocation for Garda payroll compared to budget day last year.

“This funding will allow Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald to proceed with ongoing recruitment of new Gardaí.”

“My colleague and the Justice Minister has announced two further intakes of recruits to the Garda College in Templemore, the first 100 to take place before the end of this year with a further intake of 100 in January 2015. 100 new recruits already entered Garda College in September 2014.

“I am delighted with this announcement which means Templemore’s economy will continue to benefit from the ongoing vibrancy of our Garda College.

“The Minister said she will continue to monitor Garda staffing levels during 2015 with a view to agreeing further intakes to Garda College as required. This is very welcome news for Templemore and its environs,” concluded Deputy Coonan.
