HIQA identify thousands of issues in Irish nursing homes

Inspectors identified over 8,500 issues that needed to be addressed last year to bring Irish nursing homes up to standard.

The figure is contained in the first annual overview report on HIQA’s activities in the sector.

A fifth of those issues related to risk management, and health and safety.

Nursing homes also notified the authority of more than 5,300 adverse or potentially harmful events on their premises last year.

Phelim Quinn is the Director of Regulation, and Chief Inspector of Social Services – he says they’re determined to address risk management in the sector.
