€200,000 spent on Clonmel army barracks since its closure.

Significant money also being spent on other disused army sites.

Over €100,000 a year has been spent on the former army base in Clonmel since it closed two years ago.

The 12th Infantry Battalion left Kickham Barracks in Clonmel in March of 2012 – since then security, maintenance and utilities on the site have cost the Department of Defence a total of €214,000.

It forms part of the €600,000 thousand spent by the Government on securing and running four empty barracks which were closed to make savings in the Defence Forces.

An agreement has been reached between the Department of the Defence and South Tipperary County Council for the purchase of Kickham Barracks.

The local authority has drawn up an ambitious plan for the Dillon Street – Davis Road site with Clonmel Gardai among those relocating to the former Barracks.
