Independent Local County Councillor for Clonmel-Cahir Borough District, Martin Lonergan has welcomed the allocation of funding under the CLÁR Scheme to carry out various road safety works in the Borough District.

According to Cllr Lonergan over €41,000 has been allocated to road projects outside of schools in the Clonmel and Cahir areas which include the provision of a raised table pedestrian crossing at Ballyporeen and Newcastle National Schools, upgrading of road markings and signage at Clogheen and Burncourt National Schools and the purchase of speed safety signs entering Ballyporeen Village.

Explaining the announcement Cllr Lonergan said, “CLÁR is a targeted investment programme that aims to provide funding for small infrastructural projects in rural areas that have experienced significant depopulation and which include, Safety package for Schools/Community Facilities, Outdoor Play Facilities Enhancement Scheme/support for the development of Multi Use Games Areas (MUGA) and Local Access Roads.

It is important that issues such as safety at schools and community centres and the development of amenities for young people in rural areas are addressed. I am confident that the funding provided through CLÁR will support communities as they look to ensure their children are safe and have recreational amenities available to them in their own communities”.

Concluding Cllr. Lonergan added, “I am delighted that the above projects at Newcastle, Ballyporeen, Clogheen and Burncourt have been successful in this round of funding and I have no doubt these projects will add to the safety of the children and pedestrians using the schools in question.”
