New Youth Projects for Tipperary Michael Lowry, T.D.

Independent Deputy Michael Lowry has welcomed the decision by the Minister for Children, Katherine Zappone, T.D., to implement new programmes designed to meet the needs of vulnerable young people in Tipperary.

Deputy Lowry complimented Tipperary Education and Training Board and South Tipperary Community Youth Service for their excellent work in compiling data and information to underpin their successful applications. He also acknowledged Coolmore for taking the initiative on this matter and for their outstanding contribution and commitment to the project.

The project designated for Fethard/Killenaule area will commence immediately with its offices at Fethard Youth Centre, Main Street, Fethard and the Old VEC Premises/Youth Centre, Killenaule. The service will be co-located between the two towns of Fethard and Killenaule and will provide a targeted response for approximately 30 – 40 young people in the area. Addressing issues and needs including substance use, mental health difficulties and providing support to access further education, training and employment.

An Operational Grant of €26,600 is now sanctioned and will cover the period from now until December 2016. Financial provision has also been made to fund the programme for 2017. Fethard is also under consideration for Capital Funding of €96,000 for Capital Works – which include €70,000 for

renovation of the premises and €26,000 for furniture and equipment. Killenaule is under consideration for a capital grant of €38,700 – €28,000 in respect of the renovation of the building and €10,700 in respect of equipment and furniture.
It is the Minister’s intention to shortly formally distribute the capital fund available to her.

Cahir will also benefit from a new service. The Minister has authorised a new service for situated at Cahir Youth Centre with an operational fund of €31,242 to cover the period up to December of this year. Financial provision has also been made to fund the project for 2017. The project will provide a targeted response for up to 40 young people in Cahir town, focusing on the identified needs of young people aged 10 – 24 years, through one-to-one support and developmental group work. These young people are at particular risk of isolation and would benefit significantly from engagement in youth work services. A decision will be made shortly in regard to an application for an €18,000 grant for fit-out of the Youth Centre with equipment and furniture.
