The man who bought a castle

Tullaun Castle in Coolbawn commands the landscape of North Tipperary and its owners Kevin and Sonja Bergin are on a mission to save this ancient building for future generations.

Speaking to Tipperary Times Deputy Editor Dave O’Grady, Kevin Bergin revealed his reasons behind purchasing a castle that hadn’t been inhabited since around 1640!

“Back in 2003, my wife Sonja and I lived in an old farmhouse and really developed a love for old buildings and architecture. We scaled the country looking and finally came across the castle.  Its inaccessibility has preserved it over the years so we were lucky”, he says.

The Bergin’s aim is to preserve and revamp the old structure making it a much loved landmark.

“We hope to put floors in and fix up the wooden beams. The battlements at the top would be its crowning glory and it will really command the landscape.”

Tullaun Castle is located in Coolbawn between Nenagh and Portumna and Kevin is hoping for people to get involved in restoring a piece of history and creating more memories.
