General job description
A Temporary vacancy for an official has arisen in the Education, Research and Learning Section of INTO Head Office.
This fixed-term position for a year, beginning in January 2023, arises as a result of a career break in the Education, Research and Learning Section.
The successful applicant will be part of a dynamic team committed to achieving the INTO’s objectives.
While initial duties will be in the Education, Research and Learning section, flexibility is a key requirement and the capacity to work across all sections of the office is essential.
The temporary official will carry out such duties as may be assigned by the Assistant General Secretary for the section.
Duties and responsibilities
- Contributing to the development and implementation of INTO policy and assisting in the development of services to members.
- Maintaining a detailed and up-to-date knowledge of education issues.
- Responding to members’ education related queries via telephone, email and correspondence.
- Representing and liaising, on behalf of members, with the Department of Education and Skills, school management authorities and other external bodies.
- Supporting the Central Executive Committee (CEC) and the Education Committee (EDC) in their work at branch and district level.
- Undertaking research and preparing documentation for publication and presentation.
- Delivering training and professional development at branch and district level.
- Initiating, progressing, designing and organising professional learning and training activities for members, both face-to-face and online.
- Supporting the work of the INTO National Education Committee.
- Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of key education developments, including developments in inclusion, special education and professional learning to advise senior management and the CEC.
- A minimum of five years’ relevant professional experience.
- An appropriate third-level qualification.
- An up-to-date knowledge of the INTO and an understanding of current issues in education.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- An up-to-date proficiency in ICT with an emphasis on Excel and data management.
- A commitment to working collaboratively and effectively in a team environment.
- High standards of research, writing and presentation skills.
- An ability to adapt quickly to different demands to provide a quality service to individuals and groups of members.
- A results-driven approach.
- A willingness to participate in CPD.
Also desirable is competency in the Irish language, both oral and written.
Vacancy: Temporary Official in the Legal, Industrial Relations and Equality Section (part-time)
General job description
A part-time temporary vacancy for an official has arisen in the Legal, Industrial Relations and Equality Section of INTO Head Office.
The position is for three days per week and the contract is from 1 January to 31 August 2023 (8 months).
The successful applicant will join a dynamic team, committed to achieving the INTO’s objectives and supporting members on legal, industrial relation and equality matters, providing practical support to members by way of advising on queries and representing members in a wide range of employment-related matters.
The temporary official will carry out such duties as may be assigned by the Assistant General Secretary/ Director of Legal, Industrial Relations and Equality and/or Senior Official, under the overall direction of the General Secretary.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Managing assigned casework within the section’s policies and management structures.
- Representing INTO members individually and collectively in a range of forums – including at Board of Management meetings, Teaching Council, Workplace Relations Commission, and such other forums as may be required.
- Researching, preparing, drafting and editing correspondence/emails and submissions to a very high standard.
- Advising INTO members on legal, employment and industrial relations matters including by telephone, through correspondence and at meetings.
- Representing members and/or the INTO with other agencies or organisations.
- Designing and delivering modules for INTO training.
- Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation and case law affecting members’ conditions of employment and industrial relations.
- Such administrative duties – including filing – as may be necessary for effective organisation of work.
- Carrying out any such other projects, tasks and duties as may be assigned by the relevant Assistant General Secretary under the overall direction of the General Secretary.
- A relevant third-level qualification and a minimum of five years’ professional experience.
- A thorough understanding of current educational, legal, industrial relations and equality issues affecting members.
- A strong understanding of the INTO and its key priorities.
- Excellent work ethic, capacity to act on own initiative within overall line management structure, and a positive ‘can do’ attitude and approach to work.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including commitment to work effectively and co-operatively in a team environment.
- Excellent oral communication skills, including the capacity to present cases effectively on behalf of INTO members and address various groups within the INTO, for example at seminars and/or union meetings.
- Excellent drafting and editing skills, including the ability to write to a very high standard.
- Strong organisational and time management skills including the capacity to manage priorities and deadlines calmly and in a competent manner.
- Project management skills to ensure that a task is taken through all necessary stages to successful completion.
- Proficient IT and research skills.
- Willingness to work flexibly including when required/requested outside of normal working hours.
- Commitment to providing a quality service to INTO members and contributing to the progress of INTO objectives, policies and services.
- Capacity and willingness to work across all departments of the office as required.
