IFA Aquaculture has announced the appointment of Teresa Morrissey to the role of Aquaculture Executive.
Originally from Spanish Point in Co Clare, Teresa Morrissey has worked with the Marine Institute in Galway for nine years and brings a depth of experience from working with the aquaculture industry.
Her responsibilities within the Marine Institute included providing regulatory advice on fish health matters, scientific research on emerging aquatic diseases and management of the National Reference Laboratory for Crustacean diseases.
Teresa Morrissey said she looked forward to starting her new role next month. “I am very keen to connect with the aquaculture industry, hear their concerns and represent their views, with the support of the IFA Aquaculture Committee. Over the past number of years there have been a number of issues around aquaculture licensing which has cast uncertainty over the livelihoods of businesses and local economies that depend on aquaculture, both directly and indirectly. I see great opportunities ahead for the aquaculture industry, and I look forward to playing an active part in addressing issues of concern to our membership.”
Michael Mulloy, who is interim Chairman of the Aquaculture section, welcomed the appointment and said it was important to carry on the work of the late Richie Flynn, who had given sterling service to the sector during his career with IFA.
IFA Aquaculture is a sector within the Irish Farmers Association that represents the interests and concerns of the aquaculture industry in Ireland. This includes all stakeholders that farm fish, shellfish and seaweeds around the coastline of Ireland.
