Commenting on the first May milk price announcement and the lack of any rise in returns to farmers, the Chairperson of ICMSA’s Dairy Committee, Mr. Gerald Quain, said that the continuing delay in paying farmer-suppliers a price that reflected the strengthening Ornua PPI was now becoming very controversial.
“The latest Ornua PPI translates to a price of 32.1 cpl and we must remember that the Ornua Index is based on actual prices; that is the price that the member Co-ops have already received. It is impossible for any Co-op or processor to go on ‘spinning the line’ about uncertainty in the markets and indecision when farmers can see that the Co-ops themselves are already receiving rises in their prices as was demonstrated in the last PPI”, said Mr. Quain.
