ABP, who’s parent company makes €175,000 profit a day, has today announced that an additional 100 staff are to be temporarily laid off at its plant in Cahir today due to financial pressure.
The company says that the latest decision has been made as a direct result of the continued presence of seven protestors outside the gates of the plant.
In a statement ABP claimed that the protestors’ actions ‘are putting all jobs at ABP Cahir at risk’.
The company has further claimed that the blockade has cost local suppliers in the region of €6 million while an estimated €5 million a week is being lost to the local economy in wages, cattle payments and fees to third party contractors.
The latest announcement brings the total number of job suspensions to over 450.
