The following is a statement from Jackie Cahill TD on the €2.98 million in LEADER funding for Tipperary.
“I can now announce that Tipperary is set to receive over €2.98 million in transitionary funding for LEADER. This will be allocated to community groups around the county to provide them with much-needed funding for the services they provide in their local areas.
This announcement today was a Fianna Fáil commitment in the Programme for Government that LEADER would be State funded until 2023, at which time EU money under the new Common Agricultural Policy will support LEADER’s work in funding community projects in rural Ireland.
LEADER is a rural development programme co-funded by the EU which operates a locally-led, bottom-up, approach to meeting the needs of local communities and businesses. The programme supports private enterprises and community groups in rural areas. LEADER forms part of Ireland’s multi-annual Rural Development Programme which is usually co-financed by the EU and is part of the Common Agriculture Policy (CAP). Once the new CAP commences in 2023, EU funding of LEADER will restart, and in the meantime, that funding is coming from the Irish government.
I have worked closely with LEADER in the county for many years now and I very much appreciate the great work they do locally in funding community organisations which provide vital social outlets in our communities, help to keep our towns and villages tidy and well-maintained, help to fund key infrastructure projects for local groups, and much, much more.
Last week, this Government, which my Party is central to, launched ‘Our Rural Future’, the Government’s ambitious new policy for the development of rural Ireland. It is this Government’s commitment to investing in rural Ireland. Every Town, Village and Parish is different and that means the people best placed to effect change in their communities are the people who live there.
LEADER has always been about a ground up, community led approach and that’s why I am delighted to confirm this new €2.98million fund for Tipperary today. This funding will support locally-led projects which focus on many of the key themes of Our Rural Future such as building capacity and empowering local communities, embracing opportunities in the green economy, supporting remote working and the digital transformation, developing our outdoor amenities and creating jobs in rural area
The new programme is now open for applications and I would encourage communities and local enterprises across Tipperary who wish to avail of funding to make contact with their Local Development Company to discuss how the LEADER Programme can assist their plans. If the pandemic has taught us anything it is to think outside the box so I am always happy to help groups with applications and to secure funding for their communities, so please feel free to get in touch!
