Martin Lonergan Ind Tipperary County Councillor 1

STATEMENT ON RECENT HORSE CRUELTY INCIDENT IN CLONMEL – CLLR. MARTIN LONERGAN

I want to join with everyone in the total condemnation and indeed was shocked and sickened following the emergence of further footage of horse cruelty in Clonmel yesterday. In any decent society and indeed community, selfish, inhumane acts such as these cannot be tolerated. Therefore, it is now time that the following three initial steps begin;

1. Support for Deputy Mattie McGrath’s Private Members Bill aimed at comprehensively addressing the growing problem of illegal Sulky Racing on Country roads,
2. The introduction of an Animal Welfare Officer in County Tipperary,
3. Quarterly inspections of areas where horses are knowingly kept to ensure they are been treated in a proper manor, micro chipped and that they have the proper facilities in place with the required amount of land (rented or owned).

As Superintendent Willie Leahy said, I would also urge members of the public that may have been in the Heywood Road area of Clonmel yesterday and may have further information on the horrendous event which took place, to please contact the Gardaí in Clonmel on 052 6177640.
