Dail cannot be business as usual – McGrath

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has reiterated his call for the election of an Independent candidate for the role of Ceann Comhairle. Deputy McGrath also went on to call for an explicit statement from both Fine Gael and Fianna Fail that they will irrevocably end the practice of appointing political friends to state boards or organisations:

“As fluid as the political situation is at present; the one thing we must not lose sight of is the urgent need for wholesale reform of our political structures.

Today we have a unique opportunity to send a clear signal to the electorate that we believe the entire political process not to be an end in itself but rather a means to make a real and lasting difference in the lives of ordinary people.

That difference must be based on responding effectively to the expressed wishes of the Irish people for a change in how we do our business.

It is a national embarrassment that access to the institutions of this State is still being used as a reward for party loyalty in the form of cronyism and backroom deals.

The people want change.

They deserve change.

After all the grand speeches have been made and the high political rhetoric has settled down we will still have enormous problems to deal with.

But in order to deal with those what we must avoid at all costs is a settling back in to the stale and ineffectual methods that have characterised Dáil business for far too long,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
