“Dáil Business Committee the victim of political grandstanding,” McGrath

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has called on the leader of Fianna Fail, Michael Martin, to apologise to the members of the Dáil Business Committee. Deputy McGrath was speaking after a consensus reached by the Committee with respect to Dáil sitting days for the next week was unilaterally undermined by Deputy Martin :

“Deputy Martin sought to arrogantly override a unanimous agreement reached by representatives from all political parties and groupings concerning when the Dáil should sit.

His alleged justification for this action was that if the Dáil rose next week it would further erode the public perception of the political process; ironically that is exactly what is happened on foot of Deputy Martin’s decision.

He has managed to damage the integrity of the Business Committee, which has worked with collegiality and cordial agreement since it was created. For that alone he ought to apologise.

It is the same kind of political stunt and grab for public approval that the leader of Fianna Fail consistently accuses the hard left and Sinn Fein of engaging in.

It has backfired on him spectacularly and has also given us a glimpse into the sham sincerity he displays when he talks about reforming the political process,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
