It is time for the old way of doing politics in Tipperary to change. The first step is for a new way to elect positions. To further this Tipperary Sinn Fein calls for the use of the D’ Hondt system in the new Tipperary county council for the election of Cathaoirleach and Leas Cathaoirleach and subsequent elections of the area Cathaoirleach and Leas Cathaoirleach.
The version of D ‘Hondt used in Nenagh for decades would fit perfectly as a democratic tool to drive on the new Tipperary county council and shed the old undemocratic pact system which has been used in the. This system is all inclusive and doesn’t allow any party to dominate the council due to backroom deals .
The Nenagh system would see the poll topper from each area become Cathoirleach of Tipperary with the first Cathaoirleach coming from the area with the largest electorate down to the fifth year where the Cathaoirleach would come from the area with the lowest electorate.
The 5 Leas Cathaoirleach would be the person who came second in the Polls from the lowest sized electoral area to the largest meaning different areas holding Cathaoirleach and Leas Cathaoirleach from different parts of the county .
Meaning everybody gets to be Cathaoirleach or Leas Cathoairleach according to the people’s vote which is democratic and all inclusive. It would be new Politics and a great way for Tipperary to show the way Nationally.
Sinn Féin called for this at the workshop last Friday in Holycross only to be met with stony silence from Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael who are determined to get into bed together and deny democracy to the people of Tipperary who went out and voted for change.
If Fine Gael are interested in new politics the Tipperary Sinn Fein team are calling for them to show decency and not start the new Tipperary County Council off with them disenfranchising elected members who were chosen democratically by the electorate who clearly are fed up with old politics.
Friday will tell us whether Tipperary County Council will start off with New Politics or the old failed politics of disenfranchisement.
Yours sincerely Cllrs Séamie Morris , Cllr. David Doran , Cllr. David Dunne , Cllr. Catherine Carey and Cllr. Martin Browne.
