Nenagh AFC Under 16s made a winning start in the National Cup last weekend with a 6-1 victory away to Listowel Celtic. Nenagh started well and pressed high. Nenagh went ahead in the 12 minute when Jake Morris slotted home a penalty. Three minutes later and Nenagh were two up when Kieran O Brien found Daniel Burke who finished well. Nenagh missed some real good opportunities before Daniel Burke scored a sensational second goal on thirty four minutes and the halftime score saw Nenagh three to the good. Listowel came out of the traps quick in the second half and within seven minutes they got a goal back. Barry Coffey, a half time sub, then took over as he scored an unbelievable header on fifty four minutes and scored another fine goal two minutes later. Nenagh made changes and experimented and this squad showed its depth and class. Midway through the second half Man of the Match Oisin O Sullivan scored from the spot to leave the final score 6-1. Massive thanks to Listowel for their hospitality and kind welcome and special praise for the excellent facilities they have in place

Nenagh AFC under 12 “Team 1” who beat Killavilla 4-2 in the first round of the National Cup last Saturday in Brickfields

Nenagh AFC under 12 “Team 1” competed in their very first National Cup game on Saturday against fellow North Tipperary league opposition Killavilla. Whilst this game could not be described as pretty to the eye, it certainly entertained and tested the hearts of its supporters. It was end to end from the very start with Killavilla adapting to the eleven a side game quicker than Nenagh. Nenagh had some wayward finishing and superb keeper Darragh Ryan to thank on more than one occasion in this match, along with the woodwork, before they grew into this game. Nenagh looked dangerous on the break and some great work by Niosa Minogue and Roberto Ipsalat ended at the feet of man of the match contender Aodh (Hugo) O hAnluain, he dispatched a first time rocket to the top corner of the net to put Nenagh one nil up. Nenagh kept up the pressure and the impressive Dylan Morrison put Nenagh two up after a great pass from Leon Kennedy. Killavilla were in no mood to lie down and pegged Nenagh back to 2 – 1 in the second half. Nenagh responded well to the pressure and pulled away again, Dylan Morrison again in the right place after good Nenagh play. Killavilla came roaring back to make it 3-2 with seven minutes left and the pressure mounting. Up stepped the man of the moment Padraic Hasset to bury an absolute screamer into the top corner of the net and in doing so silenced the boisterous Killavilla support and sealed the game for Nenagh. This was a cracking game that could have went either way. Well done both teams

Under 14 “B”:

Nenagh AFC under 14 “B” team took on Lough Derg in their second game of the NTSFL Division One League in Islandbawn on Saturday last. After an evenly contested opening ten minutes Nenagh took control of the game with some excellent passing football as they kept their opponents pinned deep inside their own half. Liam Hogan and Rory Moylan were both delivering quality crosses into the Lough Derg penalty area and Nenagh’s constant pressure finally paid off when Liam Heffernan struck from twenty yards to give his side a deserved lead mid way through the first half. With Jack Hassett providing cover in front of his back four, Nenagh’s fullback pairing of Kiefer O Brien and Rory Conneely pushed forward at every opportunity with both players contributing greatly to Nenagh’s attack. Paul McLoughlin was back to his brilliant best for Nenagh and lined out in a more advanced role in central midfield and after a several shooting chances failed to drop kindly for him, the ball eventually sat up on his left side and with a brilliant left foot strike into the top right corner he put his side two goals up with ten minutes left to the break. Nenagh continued to create chances but failed to add to their two goal advantage before half time. Nenagh started the second half strongly with their lone striker Matthew McGee winning an early second half penalty which he was inches from converting as his strike rebounded off the bottom of the left hand post. A minor blip in an otherwise faultless display from the big striker who picked up his second consecutive man of the match award with two assists for his team’s goals and a tireless display up front for Nenagh. Lough Derg were lifted by the penalty miss and to their credit were not going down without a fight. As the Nenagh boys were visibly tiring Lough Derg piled on the pressure and after defending three consecutive corners the Nenagh defence turned the ball into their own net and the visitors were right back in the game. With nothing left in the tank, Heffernan switched with McGee who ran his socks off in midfield for the last ten minutes and with plenty of words of encouragement from the sideline and a huge effort from Nenagh’s three second half substitutes: Anthony O Donovan, Conor McMahon and David Sado, Nenagh hung on to win 2-1. On their second half performance Lough Derg will feel a little unlucky to come away with nothing from the game but Nenagh should probably have had the game out of reach before turning the ball into their own net. Jason Teefey was Nenagh’s keeper on the day and did very well but special mention has to go to team captain Conor Byrne and his center half partner Lee Mowat who were both excellent all game. Well done to both teams
