Kilruane MacDonaghs Notes March 21st

Allianz League

Well done to Niall O’Meara and the Tipperary team on the comfortable victory over Cork. Niall had a splendid game, notching 1-1 and creating three other points with deft handpasses.

Challenge Cup

MacDonaghs lost out to Thurles Sarsfields in the second round of the Challenge Cup in MacDonagh Park on a 3-14 to 2-13 scoreline. It was a useful workout for the team that seemed to run out of steam in the last ten minutes. MacDonaghs had nine of the side that featured in the semi-final clash between the teams in 2015. However, a sobering thought — Thurles had only one of the team that played in that encounter. The visitors got off to a dream start and had the ball in the net in the second minute. The home side settled and, helped by a fortuitous goal from Cian Darcy, they were well in the hunt at the interval with the score 2-6 to 1-7 in favour of Thurles. MacDonaghs began the second half impressively and drew level. A goal by James Williams in the 40th minute gave the Magpies the lead for the first time. Sarsfields responded and a goal eleven minutes from time edged them a point ahead. The game was up for grabs, but it was the county champions who finished the stronger to take the spoils. Team: Thomas Williams, Stephen Cleary, Jack Peters, Éanna Hogan, Tomás Hogan, Justin Cahill, Willie Cleary, Alan Darcy, Eoin Hogan (0-1), Kieran Cahill (0-2), Mark O’Meara, James Williams (1-1), James Cleary (0-2), Thomas Cleary (0-1) and Cian Darcy (1-3). Subs: Conor Cleary (0-1), Jonathan Cahill (0-2) and Brendan McAdams.

MacDonagh Park

Thomas MacDonagh Park was officially opened by GAA President, Alf Murray on Easter Sunday 1966 to coincide with the Golden Jubilee of the 1916 Rising. To mark the opening, the pageant “Seachtar Fear Seacht Lá” was staged in the park.

1916 Centenary

The highlight of the 1916 Centenary celebrations will be a massive parade in Cloughjordan on Monday, 2nd May. The Cloughjordan 2016 committee has also a number of events planned for Easter Sunday. A colour party from the O.N.E. and pipers from the Thomas MacDonagh Band, Templemore will lead a procession to SS. Michael & John’s Church before 11.00am Mass. After Mass the colour party and pipers will lead a procession to the Youth club, the location of the first Catholic School in Cloughjordan. Thomas MacDonagh and his siblings attended school in this building where his parents, Joseph and Mary were teachers. Rod Rohan will read the proclamation. Rod read the proclamation at the1916 Golden Jubilee celebrations in 1966. Bawney Hayes will recite Francis Ledwidge’s lament, “Thomas MacDonagh.”  Ger Darcy, Cathaoirleach of the Nenagh Municipal District, will unveil a plaque at this location. Everybody will go to Mounsey’s Cross and will walk in procession to Grawn Church. Here, Tom Cleary, President of Kilruane MacDonaghs, will unveil an Information Board which outlines the history of the church and contains a number of historical photographs. Tom Cleary served at the last Mass which was celebrated in Grawn in 1936. Tom Williams will sing Seamus Doran’s composition, “Thomas MacDonagh.”  Peig Cahill, who lives across the road from the church, will lay a wreath on the graves of Joseph and Mary MacDonagh, parents of Thomas MacDonagh. Paul McCauley, great-grandson of Thomas MacDonagh will address the gathering. The last post and Amhrán na bhFiann will be played. Everybody will then adjourn to the Thomas MacDonagh Complex for refreshments. It is hoped to have a shuttle service to ferry people back from Grawn. While it is hoped that most people will walk out to Grawn, transport will be provided for those who need it. The 2016 Committee will be decorating the village. Parishioners are asked to fly the national colours and leave them up until after the Fleadh Cheoil in May. Everybody is invited to participate in the celebrations on Easter Sunday. Full details of the schedule on that day are available in the Parish Newsletter and in the local shops.

Club History

The updated club history, “Kilruane MacDonaghs 1970-2013, Heirs to a Proud Tradition,” will be published on 14th October. For as little as €50 you can be part of that history by becoming a patron. Thanks to all who have subscribed to date. All patrons will be acknowledged in the publication. Contact Gilbert Williams 087-2176452 to ensure that your name is included.  We are looking for a minimum of 100 patrons to get this project off the ground. We are hoping that you will be one of that 100. In fifty years time the patrons will be honoured and spoken about.

Cúl Camp

The annual Cúl Camp will be held in MacDonagh Park, 4th-8th July. Last year 135 participants enjoyed a fun-filled week at the camp. Don’t miss out this year. Application forms will be available in the near future.
