Independent TD Mattie McGrath has called on the Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, and the Minister for Local Government, Eoghan Murphy, to immediately investigate concerns about violations of the electoral register. Deputy McGrath was speaking after both the Taoiseach and Minister Murphy appeared to casually dismiss reports of numerous instances of illegal and irregular voter registration:

“I have submitted a parliamentary question to Minister Murphy’s department asking him to provide details of all instances of irregularities regarding the register of electors.

As word gets out that people, including those who are here as international students, have received polling cards, more and more instances are emerging that appear to confirm wide-spread problems.

I am aware of people in Dublin, Meath, Louth, Galway, Limerick, Cork and Tipperary who have either been added to the register despite making no application or who have been removed from the register. I also know that there are instances where some people are receiving polling cards at both their registered home address and their college accommodation.

Frankly it is insulting for the Taoiseach to glibly dismiss this issue with a cheap remark about ‘conspiracy theories. If this was a case of a number of staunch pro-repeal advocates being removed from the register then I have no doubt that he would be probably be launching statutory investigations at this point,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
