The Mayor of Clonmel Borough District Cllr Andy Moloney with Mayor of Reading Cllr Muhammed Ayub and Hollyoaks celebrities Ayden Callaghan who plays Joe Roscoe and Jennifer Metcalfe who plays Mercedes McQueen turn on the Christmas lights in Reading.
Cllr Moloney who was invited to Reading by Mayor Muhammed to meet with members of the Irish Centre and turn on the lights in an effort to renew relationships with the twin towns and the future of the relationship going forward. As a result the Mayor is hoping to come to Clonmel and the district next year.
The Clonmel Mayor had a full schedule on Saturday which consisted of a meeting in the civic offices with Representatives from Düsseldorf,Barbados and San Francisco.
There was a half hour trip to Reading FC but no time to wait for the game. The Reading fc academy has a good relationship with irish players and is also home ground to the London Irish rugby team. A trip to the Irish Centre to meet many Irish that have been in the UK for 60 years and some of who have never went home.
Both Mayors were guests at the Barbados 50th anniversary Independence celebrations that evening.
Cllr Moloney also attended the St James Catholic Church on Sunday Morning before departing and met with a full congregation of many ex Irish of whom were delighted to be telling their story and the meaning to have an Irish Twin town in Reading.
A visit to the Hibernian Club upstairs in the Irish Center which is a safe haven for many to meet and have the traditional home cooked food provided by head woman Anne Morris, who also has a book of recipes launched. The main man Dick O Brien took center stage as One of the founder members 22 years ago.
Although it was a quick trip, Councillor Moloney felt that it was very worthwhile to keep the relationship alive as the cultural link between Ireland and Reading is too important to let go.
