Noel Coonan TD and the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs James Reilly were amongst the very first visitors to Templemore’s New Tipperary Regional Youth Service (TRYS) Centre on Monday

Located in the former Courthouse on Bank Street, TRYS CEO Cora Horgan introduced Minister Reilly and Deputy Coonan to the recently renovated centre and discussed projects of importance to the group. Minister Reilly and Deputy Coonan were also briefed by representatives of Tipperary Comhairle na nÓg on the important services they provide.

“Monday 7th November was the facility’s first day to open. Both Minister Reilly and I were greatly impressed by the new youth centre which is bright, spacious and welcoming for the youth of Templemore and the surrounding areas. It is making great use of the former courthouse and will be a very beneficial amenity for the youth of Templemore. We were some of the first people in the door where there was a happy relaxed atmosphere,” explained Deputy Coonan.

“This was an important opportunity to familiarise Minister Reilly with TRYS and Tipperary Comhairle na nÓg and the vital work they carry out in Tipperary. The Department of Children and Youth Affairs provided €75,000 to refurbish the Courthouse in Templemore and establish an integrated youth space for young people in the town. I hope young people avail of this space and get involved in activities. We are fortunate in Templemore to have this new facility which will impact positively on young people’s lives.

Deputy Coonan continued: “Tipperary Regional Youth Service works with young people aged between 8 and 25 years old and have four centres in Templemore, Thurles, Tipperary Town and Cashel. CEO Cora Horgan informed me that the Templemore Centre will accommodate important projects such as the Templemore Youth Project and Templemore Family Support Project.

The Templemore Youth Project is a SPY project which works with young people aged between 8 and 18 years old.  It delivers a range of services including afterschool’s groups, targeted groups, SUS (Youth Café) and programmes in a range of areas including health and wellbeing, education and employment and youth participation. Templemore Family Support Project is a TUSLA funded project which works with young people and their families providing family support, early intervention supports, group work and interagency referrals.

“Comhairle na nÓg are local youth councils, which give children and young people the opportunity to be involved in the development of local services and policies. Tipperary Comhairle na nÓg ensure that children and young people in Ireland have a voice on issues that affect their lives,” concluded Deputy Coonan.
