Do you know a ‘Leading Light’ in your community?

The Road Safety Authority calls for nominations for ‘Leading Lights in Road Safety’ Awards 2019

19 August 2019: The Road Safety Authority (RSA) are today calling for nominations in the annual ‘Leading Lights in Road Safety’ awards. The RSA is asking communities all over Ireland to nominate their ‘Leading Light’ in road safety – a group or individual who campaigns, educates and is committed to improving road safety in their community.

Now in its twelfth year, these awards recognise and honour the contribution made by people and organisations nationwide in reducing deaths and serious injuries on Irish roads.

Announcing the call for entries, Ms Liz O’Donnell, Chairperson of the Road Safety Authority said: “In every community in Ireland, there are people quietly but tirelessly working to reduce deaths and serious injuries on our roads. These awards recognise the extraordinary and often ‘un-sung’ contributions made by these volunteers, teachers, students, businesses, journalists and community groups in making the roads safer for everyone. If you know someone that has made an extraordinary effort to promote road safety, I would encourage you to nominate them for this year’s ‘Leading Lights in Road Safety’ Awards so that we can honour the great work that they do.”

The 2019 awards will see the introduction of a new “Sustainable Travel” category, which will recognise a group or individual who has positively influenced a modal shift to sustainable travel.

Moyagh Murdock, CEO of the Road Safety Authority, commented: “The Leading Lights in Road Safety awards are a wonderful opportunity to recognise the great work being done in road safety. Submitting a nomination couldn’t be easier – just go to rsa.ie and tell us all about the project that you think should be considered for an award. There are great stories to be told about the work being done across Ireland on road safety so we would encourage those submitting nominations to make sure they include lots of information for the judges to consider.”

Entries will be accepted in each of the following categories:

  • Road Safety Champion
  • Education – Pre-primary, Primary, Secondary, Special, Third Level/Further and Community
  • Public Sector
  • Emergency Services
  • Media
  • Business
  • Future
  • Sustainable Travel
  • Road Safety Officer
  • Approved Driving Instructor (ADI)

The winners in each of these categories will go forward and be in with a chance of becoming the winner of the Gertie Shields Supreme Award for 2019.

Nominations are now open and more information on how to enter your nomination in the ‘Leading Lights in Road Safety’ Awards is available on http://www.rsa.ie/en/RSA/Road-Safety/Education/Leading-Lights/ . The closing date for entries is Friday 18 October 2019.
