Independent TD Mattie McGrath has broadly welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Jobs Richard Bruton of 100 new jobs which are to be created by Clonmel based food firm, RibWorld in Fethard, Tipperary. Deputy McGrath was speaking the Minister Bruton indicated the move would act as a catalyst for job expansion in South Tipperary:
“The announcement of the 100 jobs for Fethard will most certainly come as a welcome relief for many many families in the area who were beginning to despair of any kind of future employment prospects.
The Dawn Meats plant closure was of enormous consequence to the eastern part of south Tipperary where there were no other employers of that magnitude. I respect there are small and local employers and sole traders, but the town of Fethard had been hammered by the recession.
That being said when I questioned Minister Bruton in June of this year about was being done to secure alternative employment for Fethard he left me less than confident in terms of any kind of strategic plan that may have been in place.
So I think the credit for these jobs must go to Enterprise Ireland and Ribsworld more than any of the Government parties who seemed clueless about this only four months ago.
However the people of Fethard and indeed South Tipperary are in a much better position now that this official announcement has been made.
The task from here on out will be to secure from the Department of Jobs and Enterprise Ireland all necessary supports so that the jobs will constitute a long term employment reality for the area and in particular for former employees of Dawn Meats,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
